Purpose and aim of this course
本授業は、英語という言語、その言語が培ってきた文化、および現代社会における英語文化についての深い教養を身につけることをその目的とする。英語・英語文化にかかわる様々な主題についての文献・資料調査、調査に基づく英語による口頭発表など、少人数授業の利点を生かした学習活動を行い、研究拠点大学である名古屋大学の学生にふさわしい学術英語の運用能力をさらに高めることを目指す。
Course contents
The language of instruction is, as a rule, English. Students are expected to complete assigned readings and participate actively during the classes. Throughout the semester, Covey (2004) will motivate students to think about how to become a highly effective mature individual (i.e., development from dependence to independence and then to interdependence in a maturity continuum) according to the following schedule:

Week 2 (Oct 9): Paradigms and Principles (Inside-Out)
Week 3 (Oct 16): Paradigms and Principles (The Seven Habits – On Overview)`
Week 4 (Oct 23): Habit 1 – Be Proactive
Week 5 (Oct 30): Habit 2 – Begin with the End in Mind
Week 6 (Nov 6): Habit 2 – Begin with the End in Mind
Week 7 (Nov 13): Habit 3 – Put First Things First
Week 8 (Nov 20): Habit 3 – Put First Things First
Week 9 (Nov 27): Interim Review (E-learning Test: Unit 1 & 2)
Week 10 (Dec 4): Paradigms of Independence
Week 11 (Dec 11): Habit 4 – Think Win/Win
Week 12 (Dec 18): Habit 5 – Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood
Week 13 (Jan 15): Habit 6 – Synergize
Week 14 (Jan 22): Habit 7 – Sharpen the Saw
Week 15 (Jan 29): Course Review (E-learning Test: Unit 3 & 4)
Term paper due (February 5th)

E-learning (20%), homework (10%) participation (40%), term paper (30%)

Notice for students
対面授業に加え、課外学習として電子教材を課し、その成績に基づく評価を授業全体の評価の20%とする。
なお、5回以上欠席をした場合、「欠席」の評価がつく。履修取り下げ制度は採用しない。
